Vitanovic

Prof. Slobodan Vitanovic, PhD (1928 – 2007), former head of the Department of Romance Studies at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, founder and president of the Society of Friends of France, was a member of the Executive Board of the European Cultural Society based in Venice and vice president of the Serbian Center.

He was a visiting professor of French literature at the universities of Paris, Bordeaux, Marseilles and others. For his great contribution to the friendship between Serbia (Yugoslavia) and France, he received the Order of the Knight of the Legion of Honor, and he was also the holder of the Order of Merit for the People with Silver Rays.

Prof. Vitanovic was a member of the Crown Council and an active participant in democratic changes in Serbian society. He was a signatory to the appeal of 50 independent intellectuals. Crown Prince Alexander posthumously awarded Professor Vitanovic the Order of the White Eagle of the first class.
