TRH Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine attended today the official marking of the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Deligrad, one of the most important victories of the First Serbian Uprising.
On this occasion, His Royal Highness laid a wreath on behalf of the Royal Family of Serbia, honouring heroes of our people. “Deligrad holds a special place in the history of Serbia and in the struggle of our people to remove the shackles of slavery and oppression, and build our independent state.
The bravery of Serbian insurgents who fought here, under the leadership of my ancestor, Supreme Leader Karađorđe, reminds us that freedom is never obtained easily, and that a very high price had to be paid to secure it. But once won, liberty is guarded and kept as the greatest treasure of a nation. May we always honour the memory of the heroes of Deligrad and pass their legacy of love for Serbia and dedication to its wellbeing to generations to come”, stated HRH Crown Prince Alexander.
The program of the marking of this important anniversary started with the Holy Liturgy and a memorial service in the Church of Saint Archangels Gabriel and Michael in Deligrad, led by His Eminence Archbishop and Metropolitan of Niš Arsenije, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony. A formal gathering with speeches by HE Milca Djurdjevic Stamenkovski, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs of Serbia and other officials and an artistic program was held later at the Aleksinac Centre for Culture and Arts.
