Their Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine attended the opening of the exhibition “The Defence of Belgrade 1915-2015”, set by Dusan Babac, at the White Palace tonight.
One hundred years ago, in the heroic Defence of Belgrade, our ancestors fought against the far more powerful enemy, showing the world how to love and defend freedom. The Serbian military and civilians stood together in defence of their capital and their country. The days 5 – 10 October 1915 were filled with examples of indescribable heroism.
“Under the supreme command of my grandfather, at that time Regent Alexander, our soldiers bravely charged to certain death without sparing their lives. One such onslaught was led by the famous Major Gavrilovic, whose words will forever resound in our hearts and in our historical memory. Such examples of heroism illuminate our path to the future. It will certainly be successful if our young generations know and respect our history. I am convinced that this exhibition, which has been set up by Mr Dusan Babac, member of the Privy Council, will contribute to achieving that goal. Let us be proud of our ancestors who made it possible for us to enjoy all the blessings of liberty today. Their heroism and respect they had, even from the enemy, is confirmed through the words of the German Marshal August von Mackensen. In his diary, he wrote: “Wir haben gegen soldaten aus märchen gekämpft” (We fought against soldiers from fairy tales)” – reminded Crown Prince Alexander.
The opening of the Exhibition was attended by representatives of the Army of Serbida, diplomatic corps, members of the Privy Council Mr Dragomir Acovic and Mr Dusan Babac and members of the Crown Council Professor Dragoljub Kavran and Mr Predrag Markovic.
