Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander II and Crown Princess Katherine, together with H.E. Mr Ivica Dacic, Prime Minister of Serbia, who officially opened the exhibition, attended today the opening of the exhibition “Jews in Belgrade – life and Holocaust” at the Gallery of the Historical Archives of Belgrade.
There were also present His Grace Bishop Jovan of Lipljan, H.E. Mr Yossef Levy, Ambassador of Israel, H.E. Mr Michael Kirby, ambassador of the United States of America, H.E. Mr Giuseppe Manzo, ambassador of Italy, representatives of many Serbian institutions and numerous distinguished guests.
Marking the International Holocaust Remembrance Day in the Gallery of the Historical Archives of Belgrade this exhibition opens as of today with the aim to represent the life of Jews in Belgrade and remember the Holocaust, so to mention, until now, the unknown victims, but of those whose name are known to provide new data. There are four thematic entities – Jews in Belgrade, the whirlpool of war, victims and memories. Living and suffering of Jewish people are presented on 52 panels, three stands, one cube and three compositions. 48 victims were presented on 25 panels whose destinies show the overwhelming suffering of the Jewish community. Due to documents collected by the Historical Archives of Belgrade, Museum of Jewish History and Belgrade’s Lawyers chamber, victims are no more just numbers, without names, but become personalities with their own dreams that have been broken in a particular moment of time.
