Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander II and Crown Princess Katherine attended today a celebration of the Day of Conservators of Serbia at the National library of Serbia. The 170th Anniversary of adoption of decree on protection of historical monuments was also marked.

Beside HRH Crown Prince Alexander II, state secretary at the Ministry of culture and information Mr Dejan Risic and Mrs Svetlana Jancic, director of the National library of Serbia also addressed the guests.

HRH Crown Prince Alexander emphasized in his speech: “One hundred and seventy years ago, my ancestor Prince Alexander Karageorgevitch issued a decree prohibiting destruction of old cities. Legal protection of cultural heritage in Serbia started on that date. It was one of the first decrees of that kind in Europe in the 19th century. It instructed protection of historical monuments in their initial form. That is still one of basic principles of protection of cultural monuments. Even today it is not easy to protect cultural monuments, and I pay you highest tributes on that“.
