CROWN PRINCE ALEXANDER APPEALS FOR TOLERANCE ONCE AGAIN
Belgrade, 15 May 2008 – His Royal Highness Crown Prince
Alexander II issued a strong statement after Professor Cedomir Cupic from
the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade received death threats, a week
after the Serbian President Boris Tadic had also received death threats, as
well as other officials.
“I strongly condemn that individuals in our country have
received shocking threatening letters because of what they do or write. This
behaviour is unacceptable in a democracy and in the 21st century. This
shameful situation must stop. It will bring Serbia even more misery, as if
we did not have enough of it in the previous decade.
Every citizen in our country has the right to perform his
duty without fear, and the right to think, write and speak freely. Freedom
of speech is the very fundamental of democracy. I am deeply concerned and I
call upon the political emotions and passions to calm down, in the interest
of our country, and for the authorities to find the perpetrators of this
act. No more death threats”, emphasised the Crown Prince in his statement.
