This year marks 110th anniversary of the coronation of my great‑grandfather, King Peter I the Liberator. His coronation had an undisputable significance and importance both for internal and external consolidation of the country shaken by the May coup of 1903. All European courts have accepted the new King and wished him a long and happy reign. King Peter I worked tirelessly on the promotion of democratic principles in Serbia’s politics and life, which he considered necessary for further progress, as well as for its accession to the developed European countries.
From the very beginningof his reign, King Peter I had faced serious obstacles. The country was torn by the inner political struggle and external political circumstances inevitably led to the conflict of unimaginable proportions. However, despite all the difficulties, today we remember the reign of King Peter I as the reign of constitution and parliament, the period of strong democratization of the entire society, but we also remember it as the time of brilliant military victories, the liberation of territories that had for centuries been under the Ottoman occupation, and as the time of dignified defense of the country’s sovereignty.
Although a hundred and tenyears have passed since the coronation of my ancestor, universal values that he represented have remained an ideal, and difficult circumstances in which he implemented them, have largely remained to this day. All the reasons more for the shining example of King Peter I to be still a role model how Serbia should honorably and proudly be going forward with a highly hoisted flag.
