WHITE PALACE RECEPTION COMMEMORATING 130 YEARS
BIRTH OF MILUTIN MILANKOVIC
Belgrade, 24 September 2009 – Their Royal
Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander II and Crown Princess Katherine
organized a reception today at the White Palace for participants of
the International Symposium for the 130th anniversary of the birth
of the famous Serbian scientist Milutin Milankovic. The symposium is
organized by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA).
The Symposium “Climate change at the eve of the
second decade of the century” is central event of the year that was
declared the Year of Milutin Milankovic by the Government of Serbia.
The Symposium is held under auspices of H.E. Mr. Boris Tadic,
President of Serbia, and is supported by UNESCO. Over twenty eminent
scientists from Europe, Canada, Brazil and China, together with
numerous Serbian scientists, presented their papers at the
Symposium.
Addressing the distinguished guests, among whom
were Academician Ljubisa Rakic, deputy President of SASU for natural
sciences, Academician Fedor Mesinger and member of the Privy Council
Mr. Dragomir Acovic HRH Crown Prince Alexander emphasized:
“Professor Milankovic’s work was pioneering in the science of
meteorology and climate change, the very same area that we find so
challenging now. There is still much work to be done and questions
to be answered regarding climate change and global warming, but
Milutin Milankovic and his work set a solid foundation for
meteorologists and other scientists all over the world.“
Milutin Milankovic was born on 28 May 1879 near
Dalj, in the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, and died on 12 December
1958 in Belgrade. He was elected a corresponding member of the
Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1920 and full member in
