HRH Crown Princess Katherine was a guest at the Final Conference of the project “Technical assistance for the implementation of the National cancer screening programme in Serbia” and the National conference “Serbia against cancer,” organized by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia and supported by the funds from the European Union.

The results of the project were presented by HE Mr Ivica Dačić, Prime Minister of Serbia, HE Prof. Dr. Slavica Đukić-Dejanović, Minister of Health, HE Mr. Vincent Degert, Head of Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia, HE Prof. Dr. Slavica Đukić-Dejanović Minister of Health of the Republic of Serbia, Dr. Dušan Keber, “Technical Assistance for the Implementation of the National Cancer Screening Programme in Serbia” project leader and Prof. Dr. Jean Favre, key colon screening specialist, member of the Advisory Committee of the EU for cancer.

After the introductory part, the participants of the Conference attended a series of lectures which presented the project and the process of breast, cervical and colon cancer screening, from an expert, social, political and media angle. This project is exceptionally important, having in mind the fact that Serbia is among the European countries with the highest breast cancer mortality rate. Over 1,000 professionals in the area of breast, lung and cervical cancer have contributed to this project.   

HRH Crown Princess Katherine and her humanitarian Foundation are dedicated to helping this huge problem for Serbia. In cooperation with the Lifeline New York Humanitarian Organization and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia, Crown Princess Katherine has managed to provide a donation for a digital mamograph, which is used instead of a mobile unit, for checking-up of women all over Serbia.   

One machine, is worth €700,000 was donated to the Clinical Centre Niš, thanks to Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and it was used to examine over 45,000 women.

Several donations for treatment were given by Susan G. Komen Foundation, to Lifeline New York and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre. Over the last five years the total amount of donations exceeds US $100,000, and through great effort of HRH Crown Princess Katherine expert the training for 15 doctors was also provided at MD Anderson and Herman Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas. Ten medical professionals were trained in Houston by March 2013.

HRH Crown Princess Katherine continues her great effort in order to help her people in the fight for the prevention and treatment of this dangerous disease.
